Cape York Preparation
A successful and safe trip starts long before you hit the ramp. Cape York’s remoteness means you need to be self-sufficient and well-prepared.
- Service Your Engine: This is non-negotiable. Ensure your outboard motor has been recently serviced and is in top-notch condition. Check fuel lines, filters and propellers. It’s always a good idea to carry spare parts like spark plugs and a propellers nut kit. Our mates at Marine & RV can help you with comprehensive servicing and advice.
- Check Your Trailer: Don’t let a broken trailer ruin your trip. Inspect tyres (including the spare!), wheel bearings, lights and brakes. Ensure your boat is securely strapped down for the journey.
- Fuel Up Wisely: Calculate your fuel needs carefully. Remember the “rule of thirds”: one-third for the journey out, one-third for the return and one-third in reserve. Factor in currents, wind and extended fishing time. Fuel stops can be few and far between in the Cape.
- Essential Safety Gear: This isn’t just about regulations, it’s about survival. Always carry:
- Life jackets for everyone on board (and know where they are!).
- EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) or PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) – registered and easily accessible.
- Flares (in date).
- V-sheet.
- Bailer or bilge pump.
- Paddles/oars.
- Anchor with adequate chain and rope.
- First aid kit (including snake bite bandages and plenty of repellent!).
- VHF Radio and/or Satellite Phone: Mobile reception is patchy at best. A reliable communication device is vital.
- Navigation Tools: A good quality GPS with up-to-date charts is essential, especially for navigating tidal rivers and coastal bars. Always carry physical charts as a backup.
- Water & Rations: Carry plenty of fresh drinking water, more than you think you’ll need and adequate food supplies for unexpected delays.
Navigating Cape York’s Unique Environment
Cape York’s waterways are stunning but they present unique challenges:
- Tides and Currents: Our tidal systems are powerful and can dramatically change water levels and access. Always check tide charts before heading out and factor in currents when navigating and anchoring. Rivers can become very shallow at low tide, exposing rock bars and snags.
- Reading the Water: Learn to read the water for submerged snags, sandbanks and rock bars. Polarised sunglasses are your best friend here!
- Crocodile Country: This is croc country. Be croc-aware at all times. Keep hands and feet inside the boat, avoid leaning over the side and don’t clean fish at the water’s edge.
- Weather Watch: The weather can change rapidly in the tropics. Always check the forecast before you leave and monitor it throughout the day. Be prepared to seek shelter or head back to shore if conditions deteriorate. Strong winds and sudden storms can turn calm waters dangerous quickly.
- Respect No-Go Zones & Marine Parks: Be aware of any green zones or restricted areas within marine parks. Let’s all do our part to protect this incredible environment.

- Estuary Systems: Navigate up our tidal rivers and creeks, targeting snags, rock bars and mangrove edges for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Threadfin Salmon and Fingermark.
