When anglers dream of fishing Cape York, one name usually dominates the conversation: the mighty Barramundi. And fair enough! Hooking a metre-plus Barra is an unforgettable experience. But here at The Lure Shop in Cooktown, we know that Cape York’s waterways offer a smorgasbord of fantastic fishing opportunities that go way beyond the Barra.
As your ultimate fishing and adventure headquarters in Cooktown for exploring this incredible region, we’re not just a tackle shop; we’re a team of passionate local fishing experts who live and breathe every cast up here. While we stock the best Barra gear, let us introduce you to some equally exhilarating, and often underrated, species that should be on your Cape York hit list.
Mangrove Jack: The Red Assassins

If you want a fight that tests your gear and your grit, look no further than the Mangrove Jack. These red assassins are notorious for their explosive, structure-hugging strikes and their sheer refusal to give up.
- Where to Find Them: Jacks thrive in snaggy, predatory environments. Target them around fallen timber, rock bars, bridge pylons, and deep mangrove root systems in the estuary systems between Cooktown and the tip.
- How to Catch Them: Think heavy leaders and hard-bodied lures. Work small, shallow divers right into the snags. Live bait (prawns or small fish) dropped vertically down a structure is also incredibly effective. Be ready—when a Jack hits, you have about half a second to turn its head before it busts you off!
Fingermark (Golden Snapper): The Golden Prize

The Fingermark, also known as Golden Snapper, is a fantastic target for both its fighting ability and its superb eating qualities. Found in both estuaries and offshore environments, they offer a versatile challenge.
- Where to Find Them: Look for Fingermark in deeper holes in the estuaries, around rubble patches, and on inshore wrecks and reefs. They love structure and often congregate in schools.
- How to Catch Them: They respond exceptionally well to soft plastics jigged vertically near the bottom structure. For a bait option, fresh squid or small live herring are irresistible. The key is finding their depth, which is where a quality sounder (available at our partner store, Marine RV) is essential.
Threadfin Salmon: The Silver Streamers

If you’re looking for high-energy action on light gear, the two species of Threadfin Salmon, King and Blue are brilliant targets. Their aggressive takes and long, powerful runs make them a Queensland favourite.
- Where to Find Them: Threadfin are masters of tidal influence. Look for them feeding in the muddy waterlines, creek mouths, and deeper channels of coastal rivers and estuaries, particularly during falling tides when bait is washed out.
- How to Catch Them: They love vibrating lures! Use metal slugs, soft plastics (especially prawn imitations), or small vibes retrieved quickly through the water column. Watching a big King Threadie jump and tail-walk is pure fishing adrenaline.
